    Reduction of nitric oxide emissions from a combustor

    A turbojet combustor and method for controlling nitric oxide emissions by employing successive combustion zones is described. After combustion of an initial portion of the fuel in a primary combustion zone, the combustion products of the primary zone are combined with the remaining portion of fuel and additional plenum air and burned in a secondary combustion zone under conditions that result in low nitric oxide emissions. Low nitric oxide emissions are achieved by a novel turbojet combustor arrangement which provides flame stability by allowing stable combustion to be accompanied by low nitric oxide emissions resulting from controlled fuel-lean combustion (ignited by the emission products from the primary zone) in a secondary combustion zone at a lower combustion temperature resulting in low emission of nitric oxide

    Geodetic, teleseismic, and strong motion constraints on slip from recent southern Peru subduction zone earthquakes

    We use seismic and geodetic data both jointly and separately to constrain coseismic slip from the 12 November 1996 M_w 7.7 and 23 June 2001 M_w 8.5 southern Peru subduction zone earthquakes, as well as two large aftershocks following the 2001 earthquake on 26 June and 7 July 2001. We use all available data in our inversions: GPS, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) from the ERS-1, ERS-2, JERS, and RADARSAT-1 satellites, and seismic data from teleseismic and strong motion stations. Our two-dimensional slip models derived from only teleseismic body waves from South American subduction zone earthquakes with M_w > 7.5 do not reliably predict available geodetic data. In particular, we find significant differences in the distribution of slip for the 2001 earthquake from models that use only seismic (teleseismic and two strong motion stations) or geodetic (InSAR and GPS) data. The differences might be related to postseismic deformation or, more likely, the different sensitivities of the teleseismic and geodetic data to coseismic rupture properties. The earthquakes studied here follow the pattern of earthquake directivity along the coast of western South America, north of 5°S, earthquakes rupture to the north; south of about 12°S, directivity is southerly; and in between, earthquakes are bilateral. The predicted deformation at the Arequipa GPS station from the seismic-only slip model for the 7 July 2001 aftershock is not consistent with significant preseismic motion

    Genetic diversity of the rain tree (Albizia saman) in Colombian seasonally dry tropical forest for informing conservation and restoration interventions

    Albizia saman is a multipurpose tree species of seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) of Mesoamerica and northern South America typically cultivated in silvopastoral and other agroforestry systems around the world, a trend that is bound to increase in light of multimillion hectare commitments for forest and landscape restoration. The effective conservation and sustainable use of A. saman requires detailed knowledge of its genetic diversity across its native distribution range of which surprisingly little is known to date. We assessed the genetic diversity and structure of A.saman across twelve representative locations of SDTF in Colombia, and how they may have been shaped by past climatic changes and human influence. We found four different genetic groups which may be the result of differentiation due to isolation of populations in preglacial times. The current distribution and mixture of genetic groups across STDF fragments we observed might be the result of range expansion of SDTFs during the last glacial period followed by range contraction during the Holocene and human‐influenced movement of germplasm associated with cattle ranching. Despite the fragmented state of the presumed natural A. saman stands we sampled, we did not find any signs of inbreeding, suggesting that gene flow is not jeopardized in humanized landscapes. However, further research is needed to assess potential deleterious effects of fragmentation on progeny. Climate change is not expected to seriously threaten the in situ persistence of A. saman populations and might present opportunities for future range expansion. However, the sourcing of germplasm for tree planting activities needs to be aligned with the genetic affinity of reference populations across the distribution of Colombian SDTFs.     Atomic dynamics in evaporative cooling of trapped alkali atoms in strong magnetic fields

    We investigate how the nonlinearity of the Zeeman shift for strong magnetic fields affects the dynamics of rf field induced evaporative cooling in magnetic traps. We demonstrate for the 87-Rb and 23-Na F=2 trapping states with wave packet simulations how the cooling stops when the rf field frequency goes below a certain limit (for the 85-Rb F=2 trapping state the problem does not appear). We examine the applicability of semiclassical models for the strong field case as an extension of our previous work [Phys. Rev. A 58, 3983 (1998)].     AC-induced superfluidity

    We argue that a system of ultracold bosonic atoms in a tilted optical lattice can become superfluid in response to resonant AC forcing. Among others, this allows one to prepare a Bose-Einstein condensate in a state associated with a negative effective mass.     Sodium valproate and clozapine induced neutropenia: A case control study using register data

    BACKGROUND: The use of clozapine is limited due to the occurrence of neutropenia, and the rare but life threatening adverse event of agranulocytosis. There is little epidemiological research into clinical factors that may impact on this risk. We conducted a case control study examining the clinical risk factors for neutropenia patients treated with clozapine. METHOD: A case-control study was conducted within a database of anonymised electronic clinical records. All patients who discontinued clozapine due to a neutropenic event were included as cases. Matched controls were selected from patients with a documented clozapine exposure at the time of the clozapine neutropenic event of the case patient, matched by duration of clozapine treatment. RESULTS: 136 cases and 136 controls were included. In multivariable analysis, the concurrent use of sodium valproate was associated with neutropenia (Odds Raito (OR) 2.28, 95%CI: 1.27–4.11, p = 0.006). There was a dose-response effect, with greater associations for higher doses. Patients who discontinued clozapine due to neutropenia were more likely to be of black ethnicity (OR 2.99, p < 0.001), were younger (t = 5.86, df = 267, p < 0.001), and received lower doses of clozapine (t = − 2.587, p = 0.01) than those who did not develop neutropenia. CONCLUSION: We identified an association between the concurrent use of sodium valproate and an increased risk of clozapine associated neutropenia. These results, taken in combination with the results from previous case series, suggest that the risk of clozapine associated neutropenia could be reduced by avoiding concurrent valproate treatment

    Global parameter identification of stochastic reaction networks from single trajectories

    We consider the problem of inferring the unknown parameters of a stochastic biochemical network model from a single measured time-course of the concentration of some of the involved species. Such measurements are available, e.g., from live-cell fluorescence microscopy in image-based systems biology. In addition, fluctuation time-courses from, e.g., fluorescence correlation spectroscopy provide additional information about the system dynamics that can be used to more robustly infer parameters than when considering only mean concentrations. Estimating model parameters from a single experimental trajectory enables single-cell measurements and quantification of cell--cell variability. We propose a novel combination of an adaptive Monte Carlo sampler, called Gaussian Adaptation, and efficient exact stochastic simulation algorithms that allows parameter identification from single stochastic trajectories. We benchmark the proposed method on a linear and a non-linear reaction network at steady state and during transient phases. In addition, we demonstrate that the present method also provides an ellipsoidal volume estimate of the viable part of parameter space and is able to estimate the physical volume of the compartment in which the observed reactions take place.Comment: Article in print as a book chapter in Springer's "Advances in Systems Biology

    The formation of convolute lamination in mud-rich turbidites

    Convolute lamination is a common fold structure within turbidite beds, attributed to the deformation of sediment during or soon after deposition of the host bed. Despite the prevalence of this feature, the formational processes are still not well understood. Possible mechanisms are investigated here through redescription and analysis of convolute lamination from the Aberystwyth Grits Group (Silurian, west Wales, UK), in which ‘convolute bedding’ was first defined. Internal bed structures have been studied in clean coastal exposures and on high-resolution optical scans of cut surfaces. Convolute lamination occurs in intervals 2 to 10 cm thick, spanning the top of the very fine sand Bouma C division through the D division of interlaminated silt and clay. Observed growth geometries confirm that the structure formed during sedimentation of the host graded bed. Folds show a down-flow asymmetry and doubly-vergent diapiric geometries (‘mushroom’-shaped structures). Grain size measurements from a modern turbidite (Icod bed, ca 165 ka, Moroccan Turbidite System) suggest that there is an optimal ‘window’ of average grain size and mud content parameter space, within which convolute lamination develops. It is proposed that this window coincides with a bed density inversion created during deposition of a graded bed as clean sand (with pore spaces infilled by water) fines upwards into mud-rich sand (with pores infilled by an increasing proportion of mud). Porosity decreases and bulk bed density correspondingly increases. The resulting unstable density gradient may lead to vertical buoyancy-driven overturn, manifest as growing folds. Subsequent amplification of the folds due to density differences and modification due to horizontal shear imposed by the depositing turbidity current may then occur. The bed density gradient stabilises with deposition of low permeability mud, suppressing further fold development. Quantitatively, both Rayleigh-Taylor instability and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability are theoretically possible in forming folds in this context
